The (UK) Guardian reports that a campaign to put atheist ads on buses in the UK, has provoked complaints to that country’ advertising authority:
The advertising regulator has received almost 150 complaints that an atheist ad campaign, proclaiming “There is probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life”, is offensive to Christians and other religions that believe in a single God.
Stephen Green, the national director of Christian Voice, is among those who have complained to the Advertising Standards Authority, arguing that the atheist campaign broke the advertising code on the grounds of substantiation and truthfulness.
I’m still waiting for the explanation of how a sign proclaiming there’s “probably” no God, could possibly be offensive to anyone? “Probably” is an indefinite term, and it leaves room for disagreement.
Besides, if saying “there’s probably no God” is “offensive” to believers, then it stands to reason that any statement of belief, even one couched in indefinite terms, is just as offensive to atheists. Signs saying “Jesus saves” or “God loves you” would — by the exact same logic — also be “offensive” to anyone who does not believe in Jesus or God. (As a matter of fact, a “Jesus saves” sign offends not only atheists, but Muslims, Jews, and anyone else who is religious but not Christian.)
This also means that any other form of proselytization — from Mormons or Jevovah’s Witnesses going door-to-door, to people handing out tracts or pamphlets on the street — are also offensive (even if they are not “advertising” which the ASA regulates in the UK).
Green and the rest of the complainers here are just childish whiners. They cannot accept that there are atheists in the world, much less any that are openly atheist. They need to grow the hell up and let others believe as they wish.
