'Islam violent?! How dare you!!!' / Jack Higgins, Chicago Sun-Times / via CAIR ChicagoOnce again, the world has been treated to an example of the sanctimonious piety of the so-called “religion of peace.” This time, Islamist militants stomped into a bakery in an upscale neighborhood of Dakha, Bangladesh’s capitol, and as CNN reports, a bunch of innocent people are now dead (WebCite cached article):

Bangladeshi troops stormed an upscale bakery in Dhaka’s diplomatic enclave Saturday morning, ending an 11-hour siege by militants who killed 20 people and two police officers, officials said.

It was the deadliest and boldest act of terror in a country that has become increasingly numb to ever-escalating violence by Islamist militants.

The victims — most of them foreigners — were among roughly three dozen people taken hostage when attackers stormed the Holey Artisan Bakery on Friday evening with guns, explosives and other, sharp weapons Friday evening, authorities said.

CNN goes on to explain that this is the most savage and audacious of a number of Islamist attacks in Bangladesh in the last year or two. Several of these were very public events, too. I’ve even blogged about some of them. Among the reasons the militants have been able to organize as well as they have, is that Bangladeshi officials have been doing the dance of triangulation … i.e. trying to appease them in the hope that they’ll stop, but at the same time going after them just enough to be able to say they’re going after them. That a lot of officials have more or less openly said they don’t blame the militants for what they’ve done, hasn’t helped.

CNN also explains that, while ISIS/ISIL/IS/Daesh/whatever-the-fuck-you-want-to-call-that-barbaric-brood has accepted responsibility for this attack, it’s thought another group — al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (aka IQIS) — carried out this attack.

Note, too, this attack comes on the heels of the attack a couple days ago on the Ataturk airport in Istanbul, Turkey. As Maajid Nawaz explains in the Daily Beast, this has been a particularly savage Ramadan, and that’s been ISIS’s plan (cached). They’ve called for a worldwide “month of jihad,” it seems.

Sadly, many Christianists will react to all of this with a rather vile kind of sanctimonious glee. They’ll think — and maybe even say out loud — something like, “You see? Islam is an inherently-violent religion! This proves it! We Christians aren’t like that, we’re peace-loving!” It’s true that savagery of this sort is, at the moment, more or less a product of Islamism. But with that said, Christians need to accept their religion isn’t immune to this sort of thing, either. There really is such a thing as Christian terrorism, even if there’s a strong tendency not to admit it. And the way to deal with the raging intolerance of Islamist militants is not to be fiercely intolerant right back at them. OK?

Bangladeshi students block the road and stage a protest in Dhaka April 7, following Samad's murder. / CNN photoI’ve blogged a few times about how perilous it is to be an outspoken secularist or even atheist in Bangladesh. It seems al Qaeda has joined in with this fierce Islamofascist crusade; CNN reports that al Qaeda has taken responsibility for the latest such killing (WebCite cached article):

Ansar al-Islam, the Bangladesh division of al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent, or AQIS, has claimed responsibility for the recent killing of blogger Nazimuddin Samad, the jihadist monitoring group SITE reported Friday.

Machete-wielding attackers in the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka killed Samad, 26, the sixth secularist writer or publisher to be killed in the city in the last 14 months.

Police said the attack late Wednesday on Samad, a master’s student at Jagannath University, was planned.

“He was on his way back home from his evening classes when he was circled by a group of three to four people,” said Senior Assistant Police Commissioner Nurul Amin of the Dhaka Police.

“First the attackers hacked Samad with machetes, then shot him.”

Police said the attackers then fled the scene on motorcycles. No arrests have been made.

Bangladeshi students took to the streets to protest against the brutal killing.

While I appreciate the protests (and this certainly isn’t the first such occasion), what’s disturbing is the reason they occur: The government of Bangladesh doesn’t really do much about these killings. They largely view the killing of outspoken secularists as a natural and understandable consequence of their outspoken secularism. In response to Samad’s assassination, as the (UK) Daily Star reports, a Bangladeshi minister has decided to investigate his writings rather than his killing (cached):

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal today said that the write-ups of the slain secular activist Nazimuddin Samad are needed to be scrutinised to see whether he wrote anything objectionable about religion.

He underscored the need for scrutiny in an interview with BBC Bangla Service while asked about possible cause behind the killing.…

“I cannot say right now why it happened or what exactly happened. I need to gather information first,” the minister responded, when asked about the murder that took place Wednesday night.

“It is needed to see whether he has written anything objectionable in his blogs.”

They do this because they’d rather pacify the Islamofascists than stop them. This is actually a very common response to militancy of any sort, because after all, it’s easier to capitulate in the face of violent bullies than it is to stand up to them and even fight them if needed. In the case of secularist bloggers being killed, it’s easier to blame them for their deaths than it is to go after their killers. That this “strategy” (which really isn’t any strategy at all) allows militants to take over, doesn’t seem to occur to anyone.

Police stand with the body of Faisal Arefin Deepan, a publisher of secular books. Photograph: Munir Uz Zaman/AFP/Getty Images, via the GuardianIslamists in Bangladesh are clearly worked up over the existence of secularists in their country. And they’ve been doing something about it. Namely they’ve been attacking and often killing them. Two more such attacks happened yesterday, as the AP reports via the New York Times, and one secularist publisher was killed (WebCite cached article):

[Faisal Arefin Deepan, a] publisher of secular books was hacked to death and three other people were wounded in two separate attacks Saturday at publishing houses in Bangladesh’s capital, police said.

The attacks in Dhaka come amid fears about the rise of radical Islam in Bangladesh. At least four atheist bloggers have been murdered in the impoverished country this year.

Both of the publishers involved in Saturday’s attacks had published works of Bangladeshi-American blogger and writer Avijit Roy, who was hacked to death on the Dhaka University campus while walking with his wife in February.

This type of violence is not new in the country that the late George Harrison had done so much to help. Sigh.

It’s clear this is something that’s not going to stop happening, especially when there are Bangladeshi officials willing to blame secularists there for being attacked and slaughtered, and protesters have routinely accused their government of not doing more about the problem (cached).

Given this clear pattern of violence against secularists in Bangladesh, I’m reminded of how the Religious Right here in the US constantly bewails Christian persecution abroad, and specifically what they’ve determined to be President Obama’s unwillingness to do anything about it (cached, cached, & cached). Some have even gone so far as to accuse him of underwriting a campaign to wipe out Christianity around the world. Should atheists and other non-believers now take up the same reasoning, but about themselves? That Obama is allowing secularists to be massacred around the globe, as part of his effort to destroy non-belief around the world? Yes, of course that would be insane. Which should help illustrate how insane the R.R.’s thinking on the subject is.

Comments Comments Off on Another Secularist Murdered in Bangladesh

A photo frame displaying portraits of blogger Niloy Chowdhury, 40, with his wife is placed inside their room in Dhaka, Bangladesh, Friday, Aug. 7, 2015. Assailants believed to be Islamist militants entered an apartment building posing as potential tenants and killed the secular blogger in Bangladesh's capital on Friday, in the fourth such deadly attack this year, police said. (AP Photo/A.M. Ahad)Unfortunately, there are a lot of places in the world where being a non-believer is dangerous, and being an outspoken non-believer is undeniably deadly. Bangladesh is one of them. Just this year, four secular bloggers have been killed there. Agence France-Presse reports via Yahoo News on the latest such slaughter, which took place earlier today (WebCite cached article):

A gang armed with machetes hacked a secular blogger to death at his home in Dhaka Friday, sparking protests in the capital over the fourth such murder in Bangladesh this year.

Niloy Chakrabarti, who used the pen-name Niloy Neel, was killed after the gang forced its way into his apartment, according to the Bangladesh Blogger and Activist Network, which was alerted to the attack by a witness.

“They entered his room in the fifth floor and shoved his friend aside and then hacked him to death. He was a listed target of the Islamist militants,” the network’s head, Imran H. Sarker, told AFP.

Police confirmed Chakrabarti, 40, had been murdered by a group of half a dozen people at his home in the capital’s Goran neighbourhood who had pretended they were looking for somewhere to rent.

As one expects in a country with many Islamists, calls for help went unheeded before Chakabarti was hacked to death:

“Two of them then took him to a room and then slaughtered him there,” deputy police commissioner Muntashirul Islam told AFP, adding that his wife had been “confined to another room” during the attack.

Mahbubur Rahman, another deputy commissioner, told reporters Chakrabarti’s wife had been heard crying out “Save us! Save us!” but no one responded.

The AFP notes the 3 previous savage butcherings in Bangladesh, as well as the fact that the government there has taken the cowardly route of doing basically nothing about them:

Immediately after the murder, hundreds of secular activists joined a protest march in the city’s Shahbagh Square, which was also the venue for the demonstrations two years ago.

“We’re protesting a culture of impunity in Bangladesh. One after another blogger is being killed and yet there is no action to stop these murderers,” said protester Sarker of the Bangladesh Blogger and Activist Network.

The problem here, of course, is that as long as these Islamist terrorists are going after outspoken atheists, the country’s Muslim government isn’t motivated to act. They don’t appear to care about atheists or their country’s nominal secular nature. Secular activists are dispensible, I guess. Once the terrorists have slaughtered or driven out all the secularists, though, their machetes will start chopping into other targets … i.e. other Muslims, of different sorts than they are. At that point it will have turned into a sectarian war, and the government will be forced to intervene; but by then, the terrorists will have had time to entrench themselves and will be more difficult to go after. As unpopular as secularists are in a country which is over 90% Muslim, it really is in the government’s best interests to start going after the Islamists now, rather than later.

But my guess is they won’t see the wisdom in this. They will, as I noted, keep acting like cowards and letting secularists die so they don’t have to get up off their sniveling little asses and actually do something. Cowardice is perhaps the single most common human trait — sad to say.

P.S. Edited to add: The Center for Inquiry offers a timeline of such attacks in Bangladesh, dating back some 16 years (cached). Hat tip for this addition: Friendly Atheist.

Ed. to add: As though to answer the question of why Bangladeshi authorities aren’t doing much of anything about the butchering of secular bloggers, they just made their position on the matter clear (cached):

Terming hurting one’s religious sentiment as crime, Inspector General of Police (IGP) has advised the free thinkers not to hurt religious sentiment in their writings.

IGP AKM Shahidul Haque said: “According to laws if any one hurts one’s feelings, he will be punished by the law.”

Advising the free thinkers, IGP said: “None should cross the limit.”

In the eyes of the government, then, the lives of any anyone who’s publicly atheistic are automatically forfeit. How wonderful! (Hat tip for this edit: Friendly Atheist.)

Comments Comments Off on Bangladeshi War On Secular Bloggers Continues

Supporters of Islamic political parties burn and kick an effigy of a blogger inside a madrassa, or religious school, during a nationwide strike in Dhaka on February 24, 2013. Islamists demanding the execution of bloggers they accuse of blasphemy clashed with police in Bangladesh for a third straight day Sunday, and at least four protesters were killed when police opened fire (AFP Photo)This is such an old story, I almost don’t want to blog about it any more. The Islamic world’s inherent and pervasive immaturity continually rears its head, every time something happens that Muslims think is an insult to their religion. All too often, that immaturity results in people being killed, simply because too many Muslims cannot, and will not, control their fury and rage over what they perceive as affronts to Islam and its founding prophet. The AFP via Yahoo News reports on the latest example of people being killed because of this juvenile murderous impulse (WebCite cached article):

Islamists demanding the execution of bloggers they accuse of blasphemy clashed with police in Bangladesh for a third straight day Sunday, and at least four protesters were killed when police opened fire.

Up to 3,000 protesters, including students from religious schools known as madrassas and supporters of the main opposition party, barricaded a highway at Singair in the central district of Manikganj, police said.

The protests, and the killings that resulted, have been brewing for some time:

The violence broke out as 12 small Islamic parties, backed by the largest Islamic group Jamaat-e-Islami and main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party, called a nationwide strike in protest at Friday’s police action against Islamists.

Four people were killed, three in police shooting, and about 200 injured during Friday’s protests by tens of thousands of Islamists demanding the hanging of bloggers whom they say blasphemed Islam and the Prophet Mohammed.

Tensions have risen over allegedly anti-Islamic blog posts by Ahmed Rajib Haider, who was hacked to death last week near his home in Dhaka.

In recent weeks Haider and fellow bloggers had launched massive protests demanding a ban on the Jamaat-e-Islami, and the execution of its leaders for alleged war crimes in the 1971 independence struggle against Pakistan.

The government of Bangladesh has been trying to pacify the santimoniously-enraged childish Islamists by cranking up the censorship:

The government has warned of tough steps against those who incite social tension, and urged newspapers and blogs not to publish defamatory writings against the Prophet Mohammed.

It has cracked down on anti-Islam blogs and also given police protection to some bloggers in the wake of Haider’s murder.

Keep it upJyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoon, via Assyrian International News Agency, crybaby Muslims. By all means, please continue killing people because people blasphemed against your almighty deity, and insulted your blessed prophet. Continue raging, fuming, blustering, rioting, smashing, burning, and murdering because you haven’t got the maturity to handle the fact that not everyone else believes what you believe.

Also, I cordially invite you to keep stomping around demanding that your dour, uncompromising religionism — and the metaphysically-propagated immaturity that goes along with it — be “respected” by everyone else, regardless of whatever horrible things you may have done in its name. Yes, this means you should continue telling us … as the giant head did in The Wizard of Oz … never to pay attention to the man behind the curtain.

Yes, that’s right. Jyllands-Posten Mohammad Cartoon / 'Stop, stop, we ran out of virgins!' / via AINAI want you to keep indulging your murderous immaturity. I want you to keep providing the rest of the world with ongoing examples of what is wrong with being enslaved by primitive metaphysical thinking. I want you to keep showing us your barbarism so we won’t forget what metaphysics can do to people.

Oh, and just to egg you sniveling little babies on a little more, I’ve included a couple of anti-Islam cartoons in this blog post. Please, use their presence here to justify yet more riots and killings in the name of preventing your religion and your prophet from being “dissed” by this cynical, cold-hearted, godless agnostic heathen.

P.S. I am, of course, being facetious when I say I want Muslims to keep throwing tantrums — even if what they’re doing proves the point I’ve been making for many years. I’d much rather they become mature and learn to live with the fact that not everyone believes what they do.

Comments Comments Off on People Are Getting Killed In Bangladesh Over Anti-Islam Bloggers

Flagellants. From a fifteenth century woodcut. In what is sure to become fodder for anti-shari’a Neocrusaders here in the US, a 14-year-old Bangladeshi rape victim was killed because she’d been raped. CNN reports on this stunning victory for primitive barbarism (WebCite cached article):

Hena Akhter’s last words to her mother proclaimed her innocence. But it was too late to save the 14-year-old girl.

Her fellow villagers in Bangladesh’s Shariatpur district had already passed harsh judgment on her. Guilty, they said, of having an affair with a married man. The imam from the local mosque ordered the fatwa, or religious ruling, and the punishment: 101 lashes delivered swiftly, deliberately in public.

Hena dropped after 70.

Bloodied and bruised, she was taken to hospital, where she died a week later.

I can only assume there’s something wrong with me; something that makes my brain deficient; because I haven’t yet figured out the rational reason why anyone would want to kill a crime victim for having been the victim of a crime. I guess that’s because I’m a skeptical, cynical, godless agnostic heathen who actually thinks about things, now and again.

At any rate, as I said, the Christofascists who want Muslims removed from the US likely view this as wonderful news that supports their poor opinion of shari’a. What’s ironic is that most of them would love to see an Old Testament Judges-era style government implemented in the US … because the roots of Islamic shari’a law lie, at least partly, in the Old Testament. Precisely all of the things they complain about in shari’a law, would also apply under the Christian Reconstruction system they would like to set up. In a dominionist US, people would be slaughtered for crimes as meager as working on Sundays … and yes, even women who are raped but who don’t scream loudly enough while the attack is underway.

In other words, this case points out the barbarity not only of shari’a law, but of the Old Testament world which helped inspire it. In turn, it points out the fatal flaw in the Christian Reconstructionists’ scheme.

Comments Comments Off on 14 Year Old Girl Killed Because She Was Raped

Anyone out there who was concerned that the onset of the 21st century might have had the effect of diminishing primitive barbarism in the world, you may now breathe a sigh of relief. Thanks to entrenched hyperreligious thinking, including religiously-inspired hatred of women, primitive barbarism lives on! A 16-year-old girl in Bangladesh was punished for — get this! — having been raped and impregnated. The (UK) Guardian reports on this event (WebCite cached article):

Rape victim receives 101 lashes for becoming pregnant

A 16-year-old girl who was raped in Bangladesh has been given 101 lashes for conceiving during the assault.

The girl’s father was also fined and warned the family would be branded outcasts from their village if he did not pay.

According to human rights activists, the girl, who was quickly married after the attack, was divorced weeks later after medical tests revealed she was pregnant.

The girl was raped by a 20-year-old villager in Brahmanbaria district in April last year.

Note, it’s not uncommon for rape victims, anywhere in the world, to choose not to file a report. Of course, her living as she did in a society full of delusional, hyperreligious, wild-eyed, foaming-at-the-mouth Islamist zealots, that probably only further discouraged her. But the Guardian goes on to add:

Her rape emerged after her pregnancy test and Muslim elders in the village issued a fatwa insisting that the girl be kept in isolation until her family agreed to corporal punishment.

Now, if you’re probably wondering what kind of horrific punishment was meted out to the rapist, if the victim had been whipped for having gotten pregnant. Well, not to worry. Those Muslim elders took care of him, all right:

Her rapist was pardoned by the elders.

Yes, indeed, they bestowed the kindness and loving-mercy of Islam on that rapist. I have to hand it to the self-proclaimed “religion of peace.” Boy, you sure kept “the peace” all right. You whipped a crime victim and pardoned a criminal. Why, I can think of no better way to keep the peace, than that!

All right, enough sarcasm. Does anyone finally see how truly demented religious thinking can be, if it’s not reined in by common sense?
