In the face of criticism of his insulting comments about the earthquake in Haiti, Marion “Pat” Robertson has chosen not to back down. Instead, he’s digging in and defending those ignorant, idiotic comments. His own CBN Web site has this page defending him, (WebCite cached article):

On today’s The 700 Club, during a segment about the devastation, suffering and humanitarian effort that is needed in Haiti, Dr. Robertson also spoke about Haiti’s history. His comments were based on the widely-discussed 1791 slave rebellion led by Boukman Dutty at Bois Caiman, where the slaves allegedly made a famous pact with the devil in exchange for victory over the French. This history, combined with the horrible state of the country, has led countless scholars and religious figures over the centuries to believe the country is cursed. (Emphasis mine.)

I’m not sure who Patty counts as a “scholar” or “religious figure,” but I can say that no serious credentialed historian believes the “curse” story that Patty based his spew on. If anyone knows differently, please post it as a comment here, and I will write a blog entry on the matter.

What would be much better for all concerned … including Patty and CBN … would be for him simply to grow up, “man up,” admit his own ignorance, and apologize for having blathered on about something he knew nothing about.

But you know he won’t, because he’s a Christian and “a man of God”; he cannot possibly have been wrong, and is only being criticized because of the “painful truth” of what he said (as I blogged earlier).
